These two mighty exchange-traded funds, commonly known as ETFs,
represent the companies that trade on the NASDAQ and the S&P 500.
They trade just like an individual stock, but may bring you advantages that aren’t present when you buy individual companies. BetterTrades trading education coach Robert Roy has taught thousands of students how to unlock the mysteries of the stock market. He can help you learn the potential possessed by these two mighty ETFs.
This Knowledge Can Elevate Your Status As A Trader.
The QQQ trades on the NASDAQ and the SPY trades on the New York Stock Exchange. They track a basket of stocks.
• ETFs trade just like a stock does
• Many ETFs are optionable
• Some ETFs have options with $1 strike prices
• ETFs tend to trade with less whipsaw than most individual stocks
• Some ETFs track a stagnant basket of stocks, while others track a managed basket
Some have huge volume and others have almost no volume at all. Some trade in multiples to the market, while others trade inverse to the market. Because of the differences you need to be aware of what you’re doing. Don’t fall into the trap of jumping into a trade without knowing what you’re getting involved with.
The Qs and Spoos (or more commonly known as the Spyders) offer traders a variety of benefits. By controlling a basket of stocks, you’re trades are less susceptible to whipsaws.
The Qs track the NASDAQ 100 and trade under the ticker symbol QQQ. The ETF includes 100 of the largest non-financial securities listed on the NASDAQ. The rankings are based on market capitalization and the ETF includes such giants as Apple, Microsft, Google, Oracle and Cisco. When you trade the Qs, you can get a piece of those big companies at a fraction of the price.
The Spoos track the S&P 500 and trade under the symbol SPY. Like the Qs, they trade throughout the market during regular hours. The Spyders are optionable, so you can buy calls and puts. You can use them to take non-directional positions. You can even short these ETFs or trade them on margin.
You may be asking? Can’t I just buy a mutual fund? Isn’t it the same thing? They may be similar in theory, but the ETFs have several advantages. Mutual funds can only be traded based on the day’s closing price. Mutual funds are not optionable, you can’t short them and you can’t buy them on margin. Plus, mutual funds carry front-end and back-end fees, as well as other expenses.
