LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
It was a positive week for the stock market as earnings season began to wind down. Most economic data released last week showed the economy is definitely stabilizing.

The Dow surged 310.69 points, or 3.2%, to close at 10,023.42. The S&P 500 rallied 33.19 points, or 3.2%, ending at 1,069.30. The NASDAQ jumped 67.10 points, or 3.3%, to close at 2,112.21.

Accounting for the majority of the nation’s economy, the U.S. service sector expanded for the second consecutive month in October. In a survey by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), it was revealed that the index posted a reading of 50.6, down from September’s reading of 50.9. Any number above 50 indicates growth. Analysts were looking for a reading of 51.5.

Looking further inside the ISM survey, non-manufacturing business activity advanced marginally to 55.2%, the third successive month of expansion since September 2008. Adversely, employment within the service sector contracted for the 18th straight month, declining at a faster pace than it did in October.

In a preliminary reading from the Labor Department, the nation’s productivity was ramped up throughout the 3Q, advancing at its fastest pace in more than six years. During the July-September period, productivity increased at an annual rate of 9.5%, well ahead of the 6.4% gain analysts were predicting.

Following a 6.9% surge in productivity during Q2, the recent jump was the highest increase since a 9.7% gain in Q3 of 2003. Unit labor costs slipped 5.2% during the third quarter, signaling the third straight quarterly decline, much larger than the 4% drop economists were expecting. When productivity increases and labor costs decrease, company’s benefit on the bottom-line, but workers are left with stagnant incomes.

For the week ending October 31, the number of unemployment claims filed for benefits retreated to its lowest level in 10 months, as jobless claims fell by 20K to a seasonally adjusted rate of 512K. Economists were projecting a rate of 523K. The decline in claims comes as substantial evidence that job cuts are lessening. Meanwhile, those continuing to receive benefits were reduced by 68K claims to 5.75M, marking the eighth decline in the past nine weeks.

In the private sector, the ADP National Employment Report confirmed that 203K jobs were eliminated in October, well below the 227K jobs cut in September. Of the total losses, employment within the goods producing sector decreased by 117K, while the manufacturing sector lost more than 65K workers. October’s private sector job losses were the smallest since July 2008.

The big news for the week was October’s employment report, released on Friday. The report showed that the nation’s unemployment rate unexpectedly jumped to 10.2%, the highest rate since 1983. Nonfarm payrolls for October fell 190,000, which is worse than the decline of 175,000 that had been widely forecast. Average weekly hourly hours were unchanged at 33.0, which is a bit below the 33.1 that had been forecast. On the bright side, average hourly earnings increased 0.3% month-over-month, which is stronger than the 0.1% monthly increase that had been expected.

The week ahead will see a handful of economic data including the Trade Balance report for September, Import/Export Prices and Treasury Budget reports for October. Also, the preliminary reading from the Michigan Sentiment report, as well as weekly results for Initial Claims and Crude Inventories will also be revealed.
