When it comes to the stock market, BetterTrades coach Markay Latimer is a trendsetter. Or at least a trend watcher.

Markay believes in the importance of checking a stock's price graph and a couple of indicators to see if a trend is in place. If the stock is ready to move, Markay is ready to jump in and ride the wave of momentum to potential profits.

Markay actively trades almost every day and has an affinity for technical analysis, which she emphasizes to her students. She won't buy any option before she examines it with indicators like moving averages and Bollinger Bands. She wants to make sure the signs are all pointing in the same direction. She helps students learn the same "safety-first" strategies.

Markay uses short-term momentum trades (one to three days) and mid-term trend trades (up to two weeks) to build her portfolio. Her system can be effective for students who like the quick swing trades, as well as those who prefer to stay with longer trades. It can be done during the day, for people who can watch the market, or in the evening, for those with 9-to-5 jobs.

"It works for both," Markay says. "You can set it up at night and let technology work for you."

Markay keeps her personal trading simple: she buys and sells calls and puts. She's made money with other strategies, but found herself coming back to the basics. Keeping it simple is always a good idea, especially when dealing with new traders.

Markay enjoys getting to know her students, either at one of her on-location classes or via her twice-weekly online "Trader Talk" classes.

"It's fun to be with people who trade," Markay says. "Trading can be a very solitary thing, so it's good to have a whole class of people interested in the same thing."
