Anyone who claims they can't make money in the stock market because they aren't good with numbers should spend a few minutes with BetterTrades coach Markay Latimer. Despite her self-acclaimed lack of math skills, she's amassed a fortune by trading in the market.
"I wanted to be a doctor, but I wasn't that good at math," Markay says.
Markay was happy with her job in marketing and public relations, but struggled with a modest salary and limited long-range prospects. She was looking for additional income when she found a book about stock market trading. She was intrigued by the stock charts and saw the potential that existed with buying and selling stocks and options.
Markay studied the material, pooled her money, and started trading with a modest $2,000 account. She began by making small trades and adding modest profits. In six months her account had grown to $50,000, which stunned a local CPA who insisted she would lose all her money. In two years the account had grown to $2 million. Markay admits her success was atypical and that she was helped by an extremely fast market boosted by the technology sector. While the average student can't expect to duplicate those returns, especially in such a short time, they can profit with the proper education.
They key for Markay came through mastery of reading stock market charts and indicators, which she accomplished ironically while trying to prove such technical signs were silly and unnecessary.
"I thought there's no way a past chart is going to tell you how to make money today," Markay said. "So I set out to prove them wrong."
After hundreds of hours in research, Markay proved to herself the importance of reading charts and patterns. She was a convert. She got even better at the entries and exits of her trades.
The long-range result was the development of her proprietary system of scans that reveal stocks with tradable patterns, often before other filters pick up them up. Many students find this tool invaluable as it cuts down the amount of preparation time.
Markay has been helping students learn how to trade in the stock market for more than eight years. Her pleasant personality and upbeat style makes learning fun and keeps her students coming back for more.
Markay and her husband Jed live in Seattle. They have two sons, Kylan and Camden, and enjoy scuba diving and traveling to warm locales.
